Better AI for a Strong Rural Maternal and Child Health Environment (BARE) Lab
The Indiana University Better AI for a Strong Rural Maternal and Child Health Environment (BARE) Lab is a multi-campus research group dedicated to improving maternal and child health outcomes through innovative, community-engaged technology. Led by investigators from IU Bloomington, IU Indianapolis/Regenstrief Institute, and IU Kokomo, the lab brings together expertise in maternal health informatics, epidemiology, rural health communication, and artificial intelligence. The BARE Lab develops machine learning–based risk prediction models, multi-physiology remote monitoring systems, and large-language-model–driven patient communication to support earlier detection of pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia and preterm birth. Rooted in partnerships with rural communities and health systems, the lab’s mission is to create accessible technologies that reduce maternal health disparities and strengthen care for pregnant individuals throughout Indiana.
